The science of easier breathing
Most snoring and dry-mouth problems start the same way: your nose is doing less of the breathing than it should, so your mouth takes over. A narrow nose, mild congestion, allergies or a stuffy bedroom all nudge you towards mouth breathing without you noticing.
A nasal strip works mechanically, not chemically. It sits across the bridge of the nose and gently lifts the sides of your nostrils outward, widening the passage and lowering the resistance to airflow. Less resistance means nose breathing feels easier, so you are more likely to keep it up through the night - and that is what quietens snoring and keeps your mouth from drying out.
They will not clear a fully blocked nose or treat clinical sleep apnoea, but for everyday restricted breathing they are one of the simplest, drug-free things you can try tonight.
Your questions, answered
For most people with a narrow or mildly congested nose, yes. By holding the nostrils open they lower the effort of breathing through your nose, which helps you stay off mouth breathing overnight - the usual cause of snoring and dry mouth. They cannot fix a fully blocked nose or clinical sleep apnoea.
A well-placed strip should. Put it on clean, dry skin across the bridge of your nose and press the ends down firmly. Oily or freshly moisturised skin is the usual reason one lifts early, so apply before your night cream, not after.
They reduce snoring caused by restricted nasal airflow. If your snoring comes mainly from the throat or soft palate, a nasal strip helps less on its own - mouth tape or a change of sleeping position may do more.
Yes, and they work well together. The strip keeps your nose open while the tape keeps your mouth closed, so nose breathing becomes the easiest option all night.
