Why noise wrecks sleep - even when you don't wake up
The sounds you cannot control - a snoring partner, traffic, thin walls, an early bin lorry - do their damage even when they do not fully wake you. Your brain keeps monitoring noise while you sleep, and a sudden sound can lift you out of a deep stage into a lighter one without you ever remembering it.
Do that enough times a night and you wake up feeling unrested despite a full eight hours. Softening those peaks is what lets your sleep stay deep. A good ear plug does not need to create total silence - it just needs to take the edge off the sudden sounds that fragment your night.
The catch with most ear plugs is comfort: fine for a concert, too firm to lie on. A good sleeping ear plug is soft and low-profile, so it stays put on your side all night instead of being pulled out at 2am.
Your questions, answered
For most people, yes. Soft, well-fitted ear plugs are fine for nightly use - the main things to watch are keeping them clean and not pushing them in too far. If you have ear pain, discharge or a history of ear problems, check with your GP first.
Almost certainly. Sleeping ear plugs lower noise, they do not block it completely, so a bedside alarm or a phone on the pillow will still get through. If you are a very deep sleeper, a vibrating alarm is a good backup.
That is exactly what a good sleeping ear plug is designed for. A low-profile, soft plug sits flush with your ear, so there is nothing hard pressing against the pillow when you lie on your side.
Because DreamPlugs are reusable, wash them in warm soapy water every few days, rinse well and let them dry fully before the next use. Clean plugs last longer and are kinder to your ears.
