Brighter days may lead to deeper nights
Researchers at the University of Manchester asked 89 adults to wear a small light sensor alongside a sleep tracker, gathering more than 500 days of everyday data between them. People who spent longer in bright daytime light, and kept their light fairly steady rather than swinging between very dim and very bright, tended to fall asleep earlier and enjoy more deep sleep in the first part of the night. Irregular, chaotic light patterns were linked with poorer sleep.

Sleep problems may leave their mark on the brain
A team at Florida International University reviewed 57 brain-imaging studies covering a range of sleep disorders, from insomnia and sleep apnoea to sleepwalking and night terrors. They found these conditions were associated with structural differences in brain regions that help with attention, focus and decision-making. Because this pools together earlier scans rather than being a single controlled trial, it points to a pattern rather than proving that poor sleep causes the changes.

A surprising clue about lost sleep in Alzheimer's
In mice bred to develop Alzheimer's-style plaques, University of Kentucky scientists found that the brain's own immune cells, called microglia, seemed to be the main driver of lost deep sleep, rather than the plaques themselves. When these cells were temporarily calmed, the animals regained more than two hours of sleep a day, even though the plaques did not change. This is early, animal-only research, so it is a long way from any treatment for people.
